Does getting ahead feel impossible these days?
It's not impossible if you have the right systems in place.
If you want to get on top of your bills, pay off your debts and watch your savings grow, read on and I'll share with you the three things you need to make a budget that works.
You've got kids to take care of, work to do, and a household to keep going...maintaining a budget is just one more thing that you don't have time for.
I'm there with you - that's my life too. Who has time to be tracking expenses - even if phone apps are 'supposed' to make it easier? Who has time to be checking spreadsheets or budgeting apps and worrying if you've busted your budget?
You can create a simple budget that everyone in the family can follow, without complicated spreadsheets or software or tracking expenses.
Rather than doing up a traditional budget for the whole year, you can create a budget for a single pay period - say a fortnight. I call this your Payday Plan. It's a proactive plan for your pay.
I used to work as an accountant. My job was to create and maintain traditional budgets for people and businesses. And I did it at home for our household budget too.
I learnt two things. The first is all that expense tracking is painful. Who wants to spend their spare time budgeting? I love spreadsheets but I certainly didn't want to be spending Friday night tallying up our expenses.
The other thing I learnt was it doesn't work. All that time behind the calculator and we still blew our budget every month.
But not any more.
That's when I created the Payday Plan. A simple budget with no data entry or tracking expenses. We finally 'stuck' to our budget for the first time ever and we've never broken it since.
Once you've got your plan, you can use the power of automated banking to set and forget it.
Use your online banking to schedule transfers to save for your financial goals, your emergency fund and your bills. Let your budget do all work for you.
Stop worrying about whether you can afford the bills or whether you're going to break your budget if you splurge on dinner out. By automating your budget, you can get on with living, knowing your money is taken care of.
The third step is the most important.
To save money, you need to stop focusing on your budget and instead focus on your spending habits.
The key is to make positive changes to your habits, and the savings will automatically follow.
I've created a comprehensive eCouse that takes you step by step through the process of assessing your financial goals and financial 'health', creating a Payday Plan for your money and automating it, and maximising your savings.
Here's an outline of the course:
In the Foundation section, you set up a solid foundation for your finances. You work out exactly where you want to go so you can create a road map for your finances.
In the Plan section of the course, you go step by step through creating your Payday Plan. You work out exactly how much you need to save to reach your goals, to build an emergency fund and to cover your bills.
Next, you evaluate your common expenses to save money. Understanding your spending psychology is essential for saving money and sticking to your budget.
And in the final section, you learn how to make your finances thrive.
I'm Australian, so the content and resources in the eCourse are also Australian, although a lot of the basics are applicable for any country.
In this eCouse, you work at your own pace.
There's no start time and you can take as little or as long as you like to complete it. Work it in around your life, at a time that suits you best.
The eCourse was specifically broken down into 20, bite-sized lessons to make it easier to fit them into a busy schedule.
Each lesson consists of a video explaining the step, downloadable notes, a printable worksheet and resources to help you create your budget.
You can also email me at any time if you have any questions while doing the eCourse.

"I enjoyed the Frugal and Thriving Workshop. The most helpful aspect was defining my financial goals, followed by defining net worth, and comparing insurance and phone plans, but all the worksheets were useful and can be revisited on a regular basis.
I would recommend this workshop as a very useful tool for anyone who would like to achieve better control of their finances. I gained a better understanding of my financial goals and re-assessed where my money goes.”
