Tips for Healthier Hair

  • Avoid rubbing your hair with the towel when drying it. This will increase split ends and damage. Instead, squeeze or scrunch your hair with the towel to remove excess water.
  • Air dry your hair rather than using a hairdryer or let your hair mostly air dry before finishing it off with the dryer. But leave your hair very slightly damp to avoid over-drying. This will reduce heat and therefore damage.
  • For dry, damaged hair, use a natural leave-in conditioner to keep your hair from drying out.
  • Trim the split ends regularly.
  • Use a natural shampoo that doesn’t container damaging chemical ingredients.
  • Eat a balanced diet with healthy fats, plenty of fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water. Steer clear of cigarettes and reduce alcohol.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Active Time 40 minutes
Additional Time 10 minutes
Total Time 55 minutes
Difficulty Easy
Estimated Cost $1 - $2

Materials

  • 2 Tbsp. coconut oil
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 3 drops lavender oil (optional)
  • 3 drops geranium oil (optional)
  • For the Apple Cider Rinse (optional)
  • 4 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 250ml water

Tools

  • 2 clean recycled jars or small bowls
  • Hot water
  • Shower cap
  • Towel or head wrap
  • Jar for apple cider vinegar rinse

Instructions

  1. Place the oils in a jar and place the jar in a bowl of hot water to warm up.
  2. Comb your hair.
  3. Starting at your scalp. Dribble a little oil onto the palm of your hand and massage well into scalp and hair.
  4. Work down the hair shaft, adding extra oil as needed until all your hair is covered.
  5. Give your scalp a good massage with the oil for 3 – 5 minutes.
  6. Tie your hair up if long. You can leave the oil in your hair like this for 30 minutes or you can take this extra step:
  7. Cover your hair with a shower cap and then wrap it up in a towel. This keeps your hair warm, opens the hair follicles and helps the oil penetrate deeper into the hair shaft. Leave in for 30 minutes.
  8. Wash your hair in a warm shower. You will probably have to wash your hair with shampoo twice to remove all the oil. Make sure you wash behind your ears well and clean the oil of your skin around your neck.
  9. Finish off with an apple cider vinegar rinse (optional but adds more shine and lustre) and a cool rinse with water.

To make the vinegar rinse:

  1. Combine vinegar and warm water in a jar and shake to mix.
  2. Pour the vinegar mixture slowly all over your hair, massaging it gently through your hair.
  3. Leave for a minute or two before rinsing out.

Can this be used during a massage and left on for more then the 30 minutes? Say a few hours before it’s rinsed off? I’d love to use this for a scalp treatment for clients while getting a massage. Just was unsure if this mixture can also be harmful if left on too long.
