Make your own Moroccan spice mix for superior flavour without all the fillers that come with supermarket spice mixes.

Moroccan spice mix

While it’s easier to just buy spice mix, Moroccan spice, traditionally known as Ras El Hanout, is hard to find in Australian supermarkets.

And the ‘Moroccan seasoning’ that you can buy includes ingredients like rice flour and acidity regulator and anti-caking agents.

Instead, it’s easy to create your own delicious mix using easy to find spices that you probably already have in the cupboard.

Like many spice mixes, there’s a lot of variation between recipes. I’ve cut down the number of spices in this mix for simplicity sake.

Other recipes include spices like paprika, turmeric, nutmeg and chilli powder. It’s a good idea to start with a basic recipe (below) and then experiment with extra flavours to find an adaptation that suits your own tastes.

DIY Moroccan spice mix would make a great gift for the foodie or aspiring cook. Present it in a nice jar and maybe add a list of ways to use it (below) for inspiration.
