finding a reason or just making it easy

207763_washing_machine_screen It’s 6 am.

And I’m grating soap.

I’ve been up since 2. The little fella: fed, bed and then gurgling, grunting, snorting and farting his way to 5 am. Fed, bed.

Now I’m standing in front of the washing machine, shivering in my undies, grating soap so that I can wash another load of nappies.

With sleep-squinted eyes and grated, bloody knuckles, I have a moment of existential angst.

Why?

Why don’t I just go out and buy some Cold Power and get some sleep? And a packet of Huggies and a jumbo tin of Nescafe while I’m at it?

We made the decision a few years ago to live consciously. To define our values and have our everyday lives reflect those values; to decide what was important, what isn’t; to live by a set of carefully considered standards.

And that’s fine on most days.

But what keeps us on the path that we choose in moments of doubt, when it’s tempting to just go with the crowd?

By making our original choices the easiest option to go with.

So you might be thinking: how can grating soap possibly be easier than whacking some store bought detergent in the machine and getting on with my day?

Because at that very moment of doubt, spending a few extra moments in the laundry is easier than getting dressed, driving to the shops and buying some detergent.

Later the doubt passes. All the good reasons for making the choices that I have come flooding back. And in the dim and dreary light of that early morning I didn’t give in to temptation because at that moment the ‘easy’ option was the hardest.

I really felt for you when I read this post. When time becomes scarce, it’s so easy to take short cuts and order takeaway for dinner etc. Melissa, I don’t know how to tell you this….but with a baby…the time thing… it gets worse. My 9 month old is a little pocket dynamo. He’s a speed freak crawler and ‘cruiser’ of furniture and I have to watch him like a hawk. He grizzles inside the house so every day I take him to play activities in the community to burn up his energy. At the end of every day I am completely spent and wonder where on earth the day went. Last night I felt very guilty for ordering Indian takeaway for the first time in a long time, but the idea of pre-prepared food and no dishes to wash was too hard to resist. You sound like you’re doing a fabulous job but don’t be hard on yourself if you have to cheat just a little from time to time to keep your sanity!x

Mmm, Indian takeaway, you’re putting ideas into my head – except we had that two nights ago :) . It sounds like you’ve got your hands full – I’m not sure I want to know what I’ve got to look forward to. My little fella has decided to be a cat napping baby, so he’s up most of the day with a few 30 minute naps – it’s a long day. It sounds nice getting out and about but I bet you’re exhausted! I’m a big cheater, but I think I lost my sanity quite a while back ;) .
