Hi Astrid,
The practical voice in my head was saying a towel would be fine, but I've gotten into doing some sewing and crafting lately, so a change mat gave me another excuse for something to make. :)

That sounds like a fun idea - lots of work when you DIY, so 5 months gives plenty of time (and a 1st birthday - is he your first child? It would be exciting!)
I have an olive oil tin sitting around, I've been wondering what to do with it. I think I will plant something in it!

Honestly, after 2 kids, I can say the best change mat is an old thick towel folded to make it thicker and have 2 of them so one can be in the wash. Can be placed on anything, beds, couches, floor. Good on you though for thinking outside of the square when making one. I can't throw out those plastic bags with zips either ;)

PS: Oh I should mention that no nice books have been harmed in my pursuit of a recycled birthday extravaganza! Only seriously pre-loved books with scribbles, stains & chewed pages that have sadly reached the end of their working life as a book.

I've started planning my son's 1st birthday party (which is about 5 months down the track!) in a recycle/vintage theme. I'm using fabric scraps and pages from Little Golden Books such as the Poky Little Puppy and Scruffy the Tugboat to make festive bunting and goodie bags. I'll also be making party hats and other decorations from 100%recycled materials. At home, I use all my big olive oil tins - which were bought cheap in bulk (& have beautiful italian/spanish artwork) for decorative containers. They also make funky pot plant holders.
