homemade air freshener
I like nice smells. Yet I’m terribly allergic to artificial fragrances. Anything that initiates a sneezing fit doesn’t usually constitute as a nice smell.
Which is why I like to make my own air freshener (particularly for use in the loo).
To make:
Fill a spray bottle nearly to the top with water, add a few drops of your favourite pure essential oil or a combination of oils and a few drops of vegetable based detergent (this helps the oil and water emulsify – apparently). Effective as an air freshener or toilet spray.
I also spray this around curtains and on carpets and linen for a fresh house smell (especially if we are to have guests), but do a patch test if you’re going to do this, to make sure you don’t mark or bleach your fabrics or upholstery.
Alternatively:
- Add a few drops of oil to your oil burner for a room deodoriser.
- Spray your windscreens to catch the breeze and disperse throughout the room
- Wipe doorways, windowsill etc. with a little essential oil to deodorise a room.
- Add a drop or two of oil to cotton wool and place in a room or in the garbage bin for freshness.
- Wipe a drop of essential oil over a light bulb before turning it on. The heat will disperse the fragrance.
- Add a drop to the inside of a roll of loo paper.

Note, essential oils (proper and cheapo ones) can remove the stain from wooden furniture on contact. I found out the hard way!
Such a simple idea to create an economical way to create a spray. My favorite has always been the lightbulb idea.
