tips for buying meat in bulk

Processed by: Helicon Filter;Buying meat in bulk (from a wholesale butcher, for instance or even bulk-buy packs from the supermarket) can save you money, but there are a few tricks to making the most of bulk meat savings.

Keep an eye on prices at your supermarket and competing butchers to work out the cheapest place to buy. Check quality as well. I’ve found that cheap isn’t always edible.

To make sure your meat makes the trip home as fresh as possible, take a cooler bag or esky and some ice blocks to keep your meat cold on the way home.

When you get home, you will want to freeze your meat as soon as possible. If you can’t freeze it straight away, keep it in the fridge until you can (up to one day).

Divide your meat into portion sizes prior to freezing so that you only defrost as much as you need for each meal. This ensures there is no waste.

To save time in the evenings, pre-prepare your meat as you freeze it: slice steak for stir fries, make your mince into rissoles, chop up your chicken breasts, marinate your drumsticks.

Don’t forget to label all your bags and containers as they go into the freezer with the contents and the date. Once frozen, it can be hard to tell what is what.

A few extra minutes spent at the time of purchase will save you heaps of time throughout the month at the critical time: just before dinner. Buying meat this way not only saves you money, it saves you time also.
